My First (non mud) Running Event

It seems that every time I told people that I was participating in a Duathlon they would cock their head sideways and say," A What?!". So naturally I stopped telling people because it was more than I felt like explaining again and again. One last time I will explain what it is for all of my loyal followers. This particular Duathlon consisted of a 2 mile run, 8 mile bike ride, followed by the same 2 mile run.

It took place in Galveston, Tx at Stewart Beach. March isn't particularly a wonderful time to be at the beach and especially this day because of all the dried up seaweed everywhere. Not to mention the over cast skies.

After the bike ride I was definitely winded.

My chain fell off in the transition area. Killed my time by about :30-:45 seconds.

I'm officially a Vidorian... crap

Let's start off with a recap. Vidor has a horrible stereotype of being and terrible, white trash, racist, KKK member town (FYI, stereotype are stereotypes for a reason no matter what the subject). Six and a half years ago I started dating Britney who lived in the vicinity of Vidor. Two and a half years ago I married Britney who lived in the vicinity of Vidor. Around the same time I started going to church in Vidor. One year ago I moved to Vidor... right down the road from the High School where Vidorians graduate and take up residence in Vidor. 3 weeks ago I started working for Vidor I.S.D. right across from the High School where Vidorians graduate and then take up residence in Vidor.

Today, sadly, I've made the commitment to Vidorization. You see today, as you see in the picture above, I drove around Vidor delivering mail and packages to all the different campuses in Vidor and this is the vehicle that I drove around in. On a side note, while it does say "8 yrs Academically Recognizes by T.E.A 1995-2002" that doesn't mean a whole lot for the educational system itself. I can recognize a gap in someone elses teeth, but does that mean that it's necessarily a good thing? Of course not. And who cares about what the T.E.A. says? I don't even know what it stands for, but I can guarantee that T stands for Texas. I hope that this will be the culminating highlight of my Vidorian existance.

At least I don't live in Buna.

One day while I was in my new house I went to the bathroom to take care of some business.As I sat down the spine shivering coldness went all the way from the back of my legs, up to my man seat, progressed through my back and ended at my cerebral cortex. I thought to myself," Would I really like to put up with this freezing cold toilet seat my whole life?" And that's when I came to the conculsion (however sad and depressing it may be) that I would never ever be able to live up north or in a place of high altitude. I was upset, but then realized I won't always have to sit on my hands to warm up the throne.

I had a thought around the end of 2007 while watching TV. All of the end of year programs were on such as the Funniest commercials of the year, biggest celebrity fallouts of the year, best sports moments of the year, etc. And I realized that the only ones that ever matter are the Top 10. I began to think about this further and recalled all the top 10 lists that I've seen in my life. I've even seen a Top 10 list about Top 10 lists. And the questions comes up "What would we do with out Top 10 lists?" and I was actually afraid to answer the question. How do men rank everything that is important in life? All the way from quarterbacks, to action movies, hidden Disney movie innuendos, or of course best looking women in any category. The Top 10 list is essential to everyday living for a man and I am thankful that I (as a man) have subscribed to this brilliant idea/philosophy.

To further prove my point that 10 is the number of a man. I would like to ask all men who read this post "How would you rank that girl across the room?" On a scale from 1-10, right? I just want to show how important the number 10 is to our daily lives and how a man goes about figuring out how to think about any given situation or person. I have no use now for the 1-10 scale since I no longer have to rank any womans appeal because I have found my 10, but even still the 1-10 scale has done much good for many men and I would like to pay tribute to the inventor of the greatest rating system ( even better than 2 thumbs up) ever. Rensis Likert was a man among men and gave us the best psychological test ever..... the Likert Scale. So let us now honor Rensis Likert as a man's man, an alpha male, and no doubt having the DNA of a Schrute.

The only reason my in-laws live in a travel trailer parked next to my house is because they sold their house and they need a place to stay while they look for land to build on. So you can stop with the jokes Kevin. My family didn't come straight from Alabama or anything like that. It is just a temporary situation. I will have a pic up fairly soon so that all may see that it really isn't that bad.

The Evil Quagmire Resolved

It was a tough decision to not go with the evil empire known as Abercrombie & Fitch. I'm now with America's Most Reliable Network (i.e. Verizon Wireless). I haven't been able to post since they make us work 50 hours a week.... plus I've had other things to deal with in recent months (i.e. the blog above this one). Just to catch up for the last 5 months I've gotten a great job with a great company, I sucked royally in both my fantasy football leagues, the in-laws have moved in for the time being, I got awesome Christmas gifts including The Taylor Made Superquad 460 driver, and there is another recording of sparkler bomb history thanks to Toups. It will be posted shortly. And just for the time being just in case you haven't seen me in a while.

My whole life I've felt that there is an evil force that drives many people to seek popularity, fashion, greed, etc. And I've always felt that I was one of many who sought out to destroy this evil, this lifestyle, this repulsive beast that haunted out malls and shopping centers. My dilemma began about 2 weeks ago while I was looking for a job since I am losing mine at the REC (also another evil force). Britney's co-worker Samantha's sister Alisha told her sister Samantha about an Assistant Managers position open at the evil empire known as:

Normally there would never be a consideration for this position,but it was coming down to crunch time in the job seeking department since I am only working 3-4 days a week and steadily working less hours. So you can see why I had to at least consider the possibility of working for the capitol of New Preppyville. So I went one day after work to go apply for the position (feeling nauseous the whole time) and as I walked in with the music blaring and the cologne smell eroding my nostrils. I went on my way trying to justify this heresy saying that I need to support myself and britney and I need to do so however possible, but it didn't make me feel any better. A few days later I received a call for an interview and proceeded to go to it. During this interview I was explained verbatim the dress code for employees. You must wear an

T-shirt and preferably their sandals since it is summer. You cannot wear any black since they do not sell that color in their stores. You must be clean shaven and your hair must be worn in either a classic style or in a way that is currently fashionable. As I heard these rules just for coming to work I quickly realized that just being in this interview was affecting my mood and feelings toward the short Mexican/Native American/shorty short man. I could not see associating myself with an institution so shallow and restrictive as to what is acceptable.
I left the interview in agony trying to decide if I should return to the mother ship of trendy souls to turn in my resume or should I cling on to moral standard that keeps telling me this place is a brothel of the devil. It took me a day but I came to a conclusion..................

Christianity Series: Economic Class

There are so many churches in America. It's actually ridiculous. There are 5 in Orangefield and 10 in Bridge City. If you know the size of these towns you know that it is way too many. Anyway, there seems to be an economic class barrier in churches. I realize that some cities are overwhelmingly of the same class and thus church members would be of the same class, but at the same time there are always less fortunate families in every city.

I somewhat understand the mindset of middle class Christians in regards to keeping people like themselves in their own church. It is reasonable to want to protect your own family. You want safety for your kids and for yourself, but by not accepting a lower class individual because they are lower class is just discrimination and completely contradictory to God's word. It is an assumption of Americans that lower class people are potentially dangerous, lazy, moochers, and they will do anything to get ahead or just to catch a break. This belief is not a reason to keep the lower class out of your church. If anything it is a reason to put your arm around them and bring them in. In Deut. 15: 7-8 it says," If there is a poor man among [you]... do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. Rather be openhanded and freely lend him whatever he needs."
We, and I'm talking to myself too, should put aside our egos and not become so exclusive and be more inclusive. Paul tells us in Galations (2:10) that "all [the disciples] asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do." He was eager to remember the poor and he knew how to treat the poor because he had memorized the old testament where it tells us how to treat them. Shouldn't we also be eager to help the poor and not look down on them because they may have a hole in their shirt or because they're walking on the side of the road.
It's hypocritical to reject such people when the God we worship and follow lived his life in poverty as did those who followed. James says," Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?" For this reason alone we should be diligently seeking the poor to minister to. I guess my main point is this: Love the poor and don't be reluctant to talk to them. Don't judge them and accept them as people who you can worship with because they are the ones who are rich in faith. Also, be a Christian and don't talk bad about them because you don't know what they've lived through and we as Christians don't need to be so evil. It's ridiculous to hear that trash being said from followers of Jesus. Remember, I'm talking to myself too. So if you see or hear me do anything contradictory please tell me.

Age of Accountability?

I need a response on this one from everyone who reads this post. It don't really care if you have anything to base your opinion on, but it's better if you do. Ok, here goes.

I've been taught my whole life that there is such a thing called the "Age of Accountability". This is basically the school of thought that says children, until a certain age, will go to Heaven if they die before they are able to grasp the concept of Heaven, God, salvation, etc. And I love this idea because it seems right that God would not punish those who have not the capability of understanding such things and are unable to accept Jesus' ministry and follow his teachings. But there is also another, more scripture supported, idea that seems to be in direct conflict with this Age of Accountability.

It is well known by all of us who have grown up in church that all of us are sinners and that we are born this way into sin because of Adam and Eve's ridiculous mistake in the garden. My problem is with the statement that everyone is born into sin and there is nothing we can do about it. While I fully agree to this statement it is in opposition to the Age of Accountability. How can a person be permitted into Heaven without accepting Jesus as Lord of their life? I don't recall reading any scripture that says the blood of Jesus will cover you until a certain time then it is removed. I want so badly to believe in the Age of Accountability, but it is this speed bump that I am having trouble with. Please post and provide some insight.

Christianity Series: Interdenominationism

I just made up interdenominationism. It probably should be spelled interdenominationalism. Anyway, I've always held that the overlying theme of Christianity is love. I say that like I discovered it on my own, but that is what is written all over the Bible (1 John 4:16). I believe that to live in love there must also be unity between both parties. For instance, in order for love to be complete there must be mutual love between husband and wife, mother and daughter, friend and friend, but if there is only love coming from only one part of the duo it is not whole. I don't mean to say that if there is no love then that only leaves hate. That would be ridiculous, but there can be a neutrality of feelings.

Anyway.... Unity. When Christianity began there was only one church known as people of The Way and as time has passed on there has been a progression of more and more sects of Christianity. These denominations are tearing apart our unity in Christ. There should be one body of believers that is in sync with itself. As it is today each denomination seems to be against each other and its not even about anything important in the larger perspective of life. We find ourselves in hypocrisies because the word that is taught is that we are to love our neighbors as ourselves, which is clearly not followed when we make fun of the people walking on the side of the road or when we decide a waitresses worth by how fast our food comes out, and within those of us who follow Jesus to bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances that we have against each other just as Jesus forgave us (Colossians 3:13). It is the next verse that brings this thought all together. It says that over all these virtues (compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience towards believers) put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

My point is that we should not make fun of each others ways of worship or how others live out their faith in Jesus. That is of course unless it is in direct opposition to God's word and even then we should speak well of our brothers and speak to them in love. I don't care if you sit down to worship or speak in tongues or if you choose not to sing and I don't care if you watch rated R movies. The point is to love unconditionally our brothers and sisters in Christ because this is what is taught to us by the one who saved us. Just.... don't assume that it is not possible to have a relationship with someone of a different denomination. We should strive to breakdown those barriers that have been established; barriers that were never meant to be there in the first place.

I don't mean to sound like I've perfected this area of my life, but I would like to be better. If I ever speak unjustly about any person, especially a fellow believer, please point it out to me.

New Daily Routine

I am looking to change my daily routine. As of right now on the days that I work I wake up an hour and a half before I have to be at work so that gives me 1 hour to get what I need done. The essentials are basic hygiene and breakfast. After work I must get Lulu, mine and Britney's mini schnauzer, from the in-laws house and after that I will usually go to Kevin's house until 9:30 or so when Britney is about to get home.

I need to eat/live healthier and I need to study my Bible more.... study not just read. I'm thinking of fruit for breakfast on the way to work or maybe I will scramble some eggs. When I get home I will set aside time for me and Jesus to be alone. That's about as far as I've gotten. I'm taking suggestions so please leave comments if you have a good idea for me to implement in my new healthy and spiritually deeper routine.

I can't decide if this blog site will be more serious or laid back. So, I suppose it will just have to be a little bit of both with topics from Christianity, sports, movies, marriage, friends, etc.

I'm having trouble thinking of my first blog but I know there will eventually be a series of Christian thought, but for right now I will tell you what I'm doing right now. I'm at my best friend's (Kevin Ernst - soylentgreeniskevin.blogspot.com) house/trailor watching my most favorite movie of all time. Tin Cup has all the things I enjoy in life... golf, Kevin Costner, Don Johnson, Cheech Marin, driving ranges, and comedic timing. Ok, that's not all I enjoy but it's still the greatest movie of all time.

Britney, my wife, is at the lake with her family. I had to stay behind because of work, but I get to have some time to myself and that's ok I guess. It's only for 3 days, but i would like to have her back down here with me. I love her and I'm extremely lucky that she wants to put up with me the rest her life.

Since this is my first blog it's not very good, but the next few will be good once I gather my thoughts and put them on paper.
